Our vision is that in offering modern foreign language teaching at Peterhouse, we will:

Learning a language means our children grow up with this understanding as their world-view is developing. It opens them to experiences, cultures and friendships that would otherwise be excluded to them. We want our children to have every opportunity for joy and enrichment. How do we Deliver Modern Foreign Languages (French)?

All of our Key Stage 2 classes will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in Modern Foreign Languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons..

Our children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their foreign language lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar is integrated and taught discreetly throughout all appropriate units.

We have a unit planner in place which will serve as an overall ‘teaching map’ outlining for all teachers within the school what each class in each year group will be taught and when it will be taught. Each class in each year group will have an overview of units to be taught during the academic year to ensure substantial progress and learning is achieved. Each teaching unit is divided into 6 fully planned lessons:

· Each unit and lesson will have clearly defined objectives and aims.

· Each lesson will incorporate interactive whiteboard materials to include ample speaking and listening tasks within a lesson.

· Lessons may incorporate challenge sections and support activities.

· Reading and writing activities will be offered in all units. Some extended reading and writing activities are provided so that native speakers can also be catered for.

· Every unit will include a grammar concept which will increase in complexity as pupils move from Early Language units, through Intermediate units and into Progressive units.

· Extending writing activities are provided to ensure that pupils are recalling previously learnt language and, by reusing it, will be able to recall it and use it with greater ease and accuracy. These tasks will help to link units together and show that pupils are retaining and recalling the language taught with increased fluency and ease.

Our units are progressive within themselves as subsequent lessons within a unit build on the language and knowledge taught in previous lessons. As our children progress though the lessons in a unit they will build their knowledge and develop the complexity of the language they use.

Our Intended Coverage in Modern Foreign Languages (French)

Our French Curriculum facilitates progression for all our children and enables them to access all of the intended language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. The cyclical design of our intended coverage allows for commitment to and retrieval from long-term memory so that these become securely embedded.

Curriculum Design in Modern Foreign Languages (French)

We provide a varied Curriculum that affords our children access to a wide variety of opportunities to acquire and enjoy applying their French language learning through a range of contexts, from phonetics, introductions and cross-curricular linked themes. .

Early Language Learning

Although French learning begins in Key Stage 2, the  understanding how language and communication are essential to all people begins in EYFS.

These essential skills continue into KS1 where phonics knowledge, reading, writing, speaking and listening are further developed.

All children take part in the European Day of Languages each September, which this academic Year was a celebration of French culture, song and language.

Early Years children learn, as part of their Understanding of the World, how to say "Hello" in different languages, including French, Chinese,and some Indian languages.

Alongside the materials we use in school, there are lots of fun interactive games for the children to practise French at home, which also provide the ideal opportunity for our parents/carers to play and learn along with them! Interactive Games and Karaoke with the Langauge Angels App

Our Language Angels interactive games and karaoke app is now live on the Apple app store! It's completely free and available to all pupils.

The android version for the Google Play store will be going live in the next week or so.

Pupils will be able to find the app by visiting the Apple App Store from any Apple device and searching for ‘Language Angels’. Ask them to look out for our angel character in the app icon so they know they’re downloading the correct app.

We have created a simple login which all pupils can use to access and use the app.

When pupils login they will have access to all our interactive games and all of our karaoke videos.

The app is completely safe for your pupils to use and there is no way for children to be able to contact or interact with anyone else on the app.

Assessment in Modern Foreign Languages (French)

Our children will know and will be able to articulate if they have or have not met their learning objectives and can keep their unit assessment sheets and unit core vocabulary sheets as a record of what they have learnt from unit to unit and from year to year.

The opportunity to assess pupil learning and progression in the key language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and against the 12 DfE Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2 attainment targets is provided at the end of each 6-week teaching unit. This information will be recorded and will be monitored by the Foreign Language Subject Leader who can use this data to ensure teaching is targeted and appropriate for each pupil, class and year group as well as to feedback on progress to SLT and stakeholders. Teachers will be able to record, analyse and access this data easily using the Tracking and Progression Tool that will monitor school, class and individual progress in the foreign language.
